Run in your lane ... will you?!

“I’m not in competition with anybody but, myself. My goal is to beat my last performance” ~Celine Dion

I recently remembered a conversation I had with a friend when I first started doing my A-levels and was feeling cool and serious with myself. He said: “you are doing A-levels; I will finish uni before you o cause while I will be in my third year, you would just be entering. Lol.” I think I also typed ‘LOL’. I’m not so sure but, I can remember feeling a bit somehow and I actually starting thinking. ‘ it’s true o. while my mates are in uni already, I have not even entered’ I think most A-level guys felt that way especially because of the way some of our mates in University opened their mouths to ‘mock’ us. It was a bit frustrating at first and I will admit his comment did not leave my mind for a while. Months later after I realized something’s, I stopped feeling bad for myself and actually felt bad for him for uttering that statement. He didn’t know better and quite frankly, I might have uttered the same words if the case were reversed.

I realized I’m not in competition with anybody after discussing the issue with a wise friend also doing A-levels at the time. I’m not competing with you even if you are with me. We are not running the same race because we each have a different life to lead, different battles to fight and might have different destinations. So no, we are not running a marathon race. I don’t care if you are first and I’m second because, we are not fighting for the same prize and even if we are; allow me run at my pace. My mum always says: “it’s not the quantity but the quality” and it’s the same way I will say “it’s not how far but how well”. How well are you living your life? Are you fighting to wear the best clothes? , make the best speech? Running a rat race and not paying attention to the things that matter in your life?
So no! I didn’t bother to make a move when the whistle was blown because I didn’t care enough to run with you. I only care about racing with myself. Because I want to look at my life today and see it is better than it was yesterday. I want to pay attention to the dull areas in my life and brighten them. I want to be able to dust myself and continue racing with myself when I fall and get tired. I want to be able to attend to what matters to me and not be blinded by some stupid competition. So no! I’m not competiting with you because; I honestly don’t have time to. Working on myself and becoming better than I am is more important than having a headache thinking if you will get a job before me, be richer than me, wear better clothes than me and so on. AIN’T NOBODY GOT TIME FOR THAT.

STOP RUNNING IN MY LANE AND PUSHING ME TO RUN IN YOURS!!! Gracias! Have a nice week :)

  1. I posted on facebook a while ago when someone told me her life was better than hers, I smiled really widely from ear to ear and said, no one's life is better than the other, we are all on our own race, on our own journey. the only person we should be better than is the one we were yesterday..that's just the truth, I am glad you know that too. thanks for sharing this
