Just be you!!!

“BE YOURSELF; NOT YOUR IDEA OF WHAT YOU THINK SOMEBODY ELSE’S IDEA OF YOURSELF SHOULD BE” ~HENFRY DAVID THOREAU
Hello guys! I hope you are having an amazing year already and Happy First Sunday in the year, whoop!!!

I was having my bath this morning and pieces that I thought would later make up this article came to my head. Then, I started writing them down, mentally reminding myself it has to be nice since it’s the first post for the year. Now that I’m sitting down to write though, I can’t remember most of the things that came to my head; I danced too much. Church was awesome as usual but fashy I didn’t send anybody today o. I forgot “big girl” things and just danced away. I have something I want to say to you though. It’s the same words my dad said to me on cross-over night when I was going up to the podium to address the church members (I was nervous. I thought I would pass out as I started making my way there). I passed by my dad and he whispered; “just be yourself”. I won’t lie to you by telling you that made me stop shaking or automatically made me confident but it did remind me to act natural. Not pretend to be a great speaker (as I already planned in my mind although I knew I might fumble) and not put on a façade of one that knows it all. Just be yourself and let the words you speak be yours. I was myself and before I knew it, Mayowa’s hands were no longer shaking and I was able to put my point across more effectively. There is a true beauty in being one’s self.

I remember my SS1 days back in Olashore with my Room 7 guys. There was truly magic with Room 7 guys. Anyway, I can remember the night we pranked one of us that was asleep while we were awake gisting. She didn’t find it funny but we did find it funny and I can remember us saying “BE PROUD OF WHO YOU ARE.” #memories… so it’s the same way I will tell you to be proud of who you are. Love yourself for you. At times when I’m really dressing up, someone will be like; ‘who are you doing it for?!’ Must I do it for anyone. I’m doing it for myself. So, look beautiful for yourself. Dream dreams for you! Work hard for yourself! If you don’t like what you are now, change it to what you want to be. Mind you, let it be original and not a photocopy of someone else. A Yoruba adage (had to ask my brother ‘cause I don’t know any Yoruba adages but I still like using them. They make you look wise. *wink*) says ; “Efin ni wa. Ko si ta shele da owo bo efin to, oshi ma ru jade”. That’s ‘no matter how long you pretend to be someone else, your true behavior will still come out.’ Don’t make a mistake by letting people get used to the façade only for them to see a total stranger when the real you comes out. Accept you for who you are and those that truly love you, will accept you for you. Be beautiful in your heart and soul even if not physically. Inner beauty as far as I’m concerned is more important than physical beauty (thank God guys are starting to realize that now). Be happy because of you ‘cause if you are happy because of someone else, your happiness goes with the person. Pray, love and eat. Work on your flaws and magnify your strengths.

So in this year 2014, amongst other things I wish you, I wish you the strength and courage to be you. To speak out and let the world see the good in you. To live your life without giving excuses. You owe nobody no explanation when it comes to your life. Its only in Nigeria that you have to explain yourself even to strangers. Just walk with God and be right by him. Be beautiful. Have an amazing week!!

  1. This is beautiful, always a needed reminder too!

Aside: It's a small world after all, two of my siblings finished from Olashore (that's if you were talking about the one in Iloko though)
