uncertainties to certainties

"Uncertainty is the only certainty there is"~ John Allen Paulos
I asked my younger sister to cook a delicacy which she had just learned uncertain of its outcome but I took a leap of faith and asked her to make it anyway. Well I guess secretly she was unsure of the outcome but concealed it. I'm however sure she was very certain she knew what she was doing. It got me thinking about the many uncertainties that comes with living and the certainties we have managed to make out of those uncertainties.

"I love you" he says to me but does he really?! I mean how certain am I but at the same time, how uncertain am I?! I guess there are two sides to it or perhaps more. What of me? I mean I'm pretty certain the me of last night is the me of this morning. But how certain I'm I really?. Something might have caused a change in me unaware. I'm certain I love him! I'm certain she is my friend yet though most of us are certain about somethings, there is still that "uncertainty" tugged inside every certainty. I'm certain you love me yet I'm uncertain as I might be wrong and perhaps a pawn in your game however, the irony is, I'm not certain about my uncertainty so as Blaise Pascal said; I'll n'est pas certain que tout soit incertain( it is not certain that everything is uncertain). My study of Libertarianism and Determinism really opened my eyes to the fact that we indeed live in a contingent world in which there are no certainties yet this does not mean all is randomness. "Why not believe in a higher being who seems certain to some and yet uncertain to some. I personally believe not everything is within our control and power and just because something such as the existence of a higher being is beyond our understanding doesn't make it one of the many uncertainties.

"Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best out of it, without knowing what's going to happen next"~Gilda Radner......I'm sure I'm happy right now but who says I will still be in the next 2 mins yet who says I shouldn't be. Happiness for a lifetime is a probability however it can be made certain by having a certain mindset which will strive towards achieving eudaimonia. By deciding to be happy ahead of time. IT'S SIMPLY TURNING UNCERTAINTIES TO CERTAINTIES BY APPLYING A WILL OF EFFORT. Uncertainties I believe are somehow intertwined with change and are perhaps there to push us to want to discover more, put in more effort. I'm not certain I will wake up tomorrow although I pray I do. So why not make the most of today which is my now? Why not be happy, laugh, love? Just like Mark Twain, I believe it is important to dream, discover and a times sail away from one's safe harbour so you won't have to look back tomorrow filled with regrets of things not done because you were curbed by the fear of uncertainties. Even with all checks put in place what guarantees do we really have? I strongly agree with Mark Helprin when he wrote; "If you won't take a chance, then the powers you refuse because you cannot explain then, will, as they say, make a monkey out of you". You not knowing how things will turn out does not mean you shouldn't go ahead and give it your all 'cause you never know which will be the amazing stuff.

I would say THERE IS NOTHING LIKE ABSOLUTE PERFECTION. Perfection is relative and largely dependent on what you believe is good enough after putting in the effort. Then the perfection which might be uncertain to some becomes certain to you. So my life is perfect not because it is free from the many uncertainties it is surrounded by rather it is perfect because I have learnt to appreciate even the little things and have changed my mindset consciously willing the uncertainties to perfect certainties aiming towards the virtue of arete amongst others. I will leave you with a quote from R.I Fitzhenry:" Uncertainty and mystery are energies of life. Don't let them scare you unduly, for they keep boredom at bay and spark creativity. Besides, "Isn't it the moment of most profound doubt that gives bith to new certainties? Perhaps hopelessness is the very soil that nourishes human hope; perhaps one could never find sense in life without first experiencing its absurdity"~ Vaclav Havel.
